to disputed student union’s elections, Jaromogi Oginga Odinga University
of Science and Technology (JOOUST) has been closed down indefinitely.
The demonstrations which continued until Saturday called for police intervention after students become too rowdy.
Speaking to The Standard, the university’s Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Prof. Joseph Bosire, said the chaos started after one of the election contestants refused to concede defeat.
“The disputed election results were that of the Secretary General, a post which had two contestants. One of them refused to concede defeat which led to his supporters becoming unruly,” said Bosire.
Bosire also explained that the election agent declined to sign papers because the candidate did not follow the right procedures of appealing the result as he was instructed.
Already, the senate has formed a committee that is going to look into what might have caused the chaos. The report is expected by Wednesday an this will inform the university in estimating the value of damages incurred.
In addition to burning one vehicle, the Friday incident also caused destruction of property. The unruly students who had engaged police in running battles of the better part of Friday night had barricaded Bondo-Usenge road, stoning any vehicle they came across.
Moreover, a group of the rioting students looted shops along the university way, attacked boda boda (motorbike rider offering transport in the area) and made away with one motorbike. The bodaboda operators blocked students from advancing their destruction to town.
Bondo MP, Gideon Ochanda condemned the incident, saying the students need to come up with better ways to solve problems internally without inflicting massive destruction to their neighborhood.
“I condemn the violence the students resorted to, particularly on destruction of private property. In future, university issues like those of elections must be contained within the university premises,” said Ochanda.
