Bleak Xmas For Varsity Lecturers…As FG Fails To Pay Salaries

LECTURERS in the nation’s public universities may face bleak Christmas and New Year celebrations, as they did not receive their salaries in the last five months.

The teachers only last Tuesday ended their 169-day strike.

They embarked on the strike on July 1 to demand the implementation of an agreement their umbrella body, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, reached with the Federal Government in 2009.

The ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Fagge, who announced the suspension of the strike last Tuesday, said the union had accepted the resolutions it signed with the government on December 11.

The resolutions include immediate commencement of the revitalisation processes as contained in a letter with reference number FME/PS/398/C.1/Vol i.1/110, dated December 12, 2013, entitled, “Opening of Dedicated Account for Revitalisation of Nigerian Universities.”

But barely one week after the strike ended and 24 hours to Christmas, findings by our correspondents showed that the teachers had yet to collect their salaries.

ABU Re-opens December 29th, Exam Kicks-off January 13th, 2014

This is to inform all Greatest ABUites that the school management have resolved to re-open beginning from 29th of December, 2013 for the completion of the 2012/2013 session.

On this note, old students of the school are expected to be on campus on or before January 12 as examination is set to commence on the 13th.

As promised, Examination Time Table Will Soon Be Out. Next Session Begins On 2nd February, 2014.

Jigawa sponsors 240 varsity staff for post graduate degrees

The Jigawa government said it had sponsored 240 academic staff of the newly established state university in Kafin-Hausa to undergo masters degree in various courses.

The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Haruna Wakili, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Dutse.

He said the move was aimed at starting the school on a sound foundation, with qualified lecturers in all the courses it would be running.

He added that 80 of the university staff were sponsored for PhD courses, while 160 of them were for masters programmes.
