Meaning:
"Whatever happens, life must continue as before (e.g. independent of somebody's death)"

Meaning:
"analyse the true features of a man as opposed to rumors (e.g. about Marx)"


"stomp"

Meaning:
"to walk or dance with a heavy step"

"cough one's head off"

Meaning:
"to cough violently and persistently"
"rub salt into somebody's wounds"

Meaning:
"to aggravate somebody's suffering (esp. intentionally)"
"try to wriggle out"

Meaning:
"to try to change the subject in order to hide one's error or ignorance (e.g. in a discussion)"
"put first things first"

Meaning:
"to do things in a proper sequence"
"(in) the right church but (in) the wrong pew"

Meaning:
"the association is correct, but not complete (e.g. in response to somebody's guess)"
"if the cap fits ..."

Meaning:
"if the person thinks the remark applies to him ..."
"lead somebody a (merry) dance"
