UNN Director urges FG to ignore calls for the re-instatement of sacked Pro-Chancellor

The Acting Director of Centre for Igbo Studies of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Dr Tony Nwaezeigwe has called on the Federal Government to ignore the calls for the re-instatement of Dr. Emeka Enejere, sacked Pro-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, saying that re-instating the Dr Enejere would further polarise the institution.

The member of the Senate of the University noted that those making the calls for the re-instatement of Dr. Enejere share a similar agenda of purging the institution of staff from outside of Nsukka area. He claimed that the former Pro-Chancellor came to the institution with a clannish agenda that is inimical to the global interests of the university.

According to him, the Federal Government’s decision to sack Dr. Enejere was done in the best interest of the University and its focus on academic excellence, pointing out that the barrage of media propaganda only prove the hidden agenda of these group.

He said that staff and students of the University of Nigeria have resumed for full academic activities, contrary to sponsored media reports by those promoting clannish agenda in the university.

Dr Nwaezeigwe said that the former Pro-Chancellor aligned himself with
one of the three host communities and was insisting that the University authority foot the bill of providing electricity for the community. He said the refusal of the Vice Chancellor, led to the conflict that ensued.

He added that the former Pro-Chancellor also went ahead to be involved in the daily running of the institution and the issuance of directive to staff which ran contrary to administrative standards.

The Director, Centre for Igbo Studies stated that since the 1980s, the tenure of the current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bartho Okolo has witnessed the highest level of infrastructural development, prompting the unfounded allegations that funds are being misappropriated.

The academic added that the Vice Chancellor has also been able to attract several private projects and improved on the use of Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, to execute projects in the school
