Lecturers of the Tai Solarin College of Education, Omu-Ijebu,
Ogun State have called on Governor Ibikunle Amosu to return the
institution to its former site at Ijagun in Ijebu-Ode.
This, they said, would help “restore the lost glory of the college.”
TASCE was in 2008 relocated from Ijebu Ode to Omu-Ijebu.
The lecturers under the aegis Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union
said the relocation, among other things, had impacted negatively on the
fortunes of the school.
They noted, for instance, that the student population had reduced
drastically just as the environment had yet to be conducive for
learning.
Alleging that the relocation was in bad faith, they urged the governor to revisit the decision.
In a statement by the Chairman and
the Secretary of COESU, Dr. Dan
Oludipe, and Mrs. Modupe Owolabi, they noted that the decision to
relocate the college by former Governor Gbenga Daniel was ill-advised.
Describing the decision as counter-productive, the union added that the
development had turned the college to “a glorified secondary school with
very low student population, and inadequate infrastructure to impart
knowledge to the future leaders of the country.”
The lecturers, in the statement, further claimed that the financial
fortunes of its members had nosedived as the state government still owed
them some salaries.
The statement added, “This is in addition to 48 months salary arrears of
the new minimum wage COMPCASS which our colleagues at Tai Solarin
University of Education have been enjoying up to date.”
Urging Amosun to revisit the issue, the lecturers said the move would help prevent the imminent collapse of the college.
