Nov/Dec WASSCE Mass Failure, a Product of Poor Reading Habit - Former CWO Leader

Mrs Francisca Obasuyi, former President of the Catholic Women Organisation, Ijegun branch, Lagos State, has attributed the mass failure in the last November and December external examinations to poor reading habit among students.

According to her computers, phones and internet are huge distractions to students.

“ The problem is that they don’t have the habit of reading, unlike those days when our parents bought story books for us.

“During holidays, we read story books and we read magazines, we read newspapers.

“But children of these days, don’t do that, and in those days when you read newspapers when you met a word you did not understand, you would go to your dictionary.

“Children of these days don’t do that, they don’t even read newspapers. The habit of reading is not there during the holidays.

“During holidays that children were supposed to be reading, they go back to school, to continue where they have stopped.

“They are supposed to be at home, read newspapers, read novels and diversify their knowledge, but it’s not there, they go back to the same old knowledge.

“And apart from that, we parents, calculator, phones, GSM, have spoilt our brain, we just come out to start pressing.

Educationists Blame Govt For Mass Failure In NECO, WAEC

Stakeholders in Nigeria’s education sector have said that government’s inability to alleviate the fundamental challenges in the sector is responsible for the poor performance of students in the qualifying examinations organized by the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the West African Examination Council.

Leading this call was the WAEC Chairman, Professor Pai Obanya, who was the lead discussant at a forum for stakeholders in Lagos last weekend.

At the forum, themed: Education: Building Viable Frameworks for Sustainability, Obanya insisted that, “there should be an assessment of the education sector as a whole as a way of ensuring appropriate policies, programmes and processes. Examination failure is a surface manifestation of system failure, this is why constant system assessment is paramount.”

According to the don, it requires good politics to

WAEC laments Dearth Of Teaching Staff In Schools

The Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC) of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has lamented the dearth of teaching staff in schools, just as it also called on state governments and proprietors of private schools to procure detectors to prevent candidates from smuggling in mobile handsets into examination halls.

This was disclosed at the 56th meeting of Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC) of WAEC held for three days at Excellence Hotel and Conference Centre, Ogba, Lagos.
The Committee expressed deep concern about the dearth of teaching staff in schools all over the country and called on government to urgently institute measures, such as offering special incentives, in order to attract the youth to read education-based courses in universities, particularly Mathematics Education.

Besides, it also called for appreciable improvement in the reward system for teachers nationwide, in order to motivate them to put in their best.

In its concern to revamp standard of education in Nigeria, the

Meet The 9-Year-Old Girl Who Passed The WAEC Exams

She was eight years old when she sat for the
November/December 2013 West African
Examination Council (WAEC) examination. When the
result came out recently, Anjola Victoria Mautin
Botoku, passed the papers.

Currently a grade 6 pupil of Edidot school, Badore,
Ajah, Lagos, had credit in English and French which
were the only subjects her parents allowed her to
register for.

In her own words, it was just a game to prove to her
siblings, Babajide and Olujunmi, that there is no big
deal in writing an exam. It all started like a child's
play, Anjola always confronted hes elder brother,
Babajide who was always driving her away from his
room with the excuse that he needs to concentrate
and prepare for his exams.Known to

Restitution: Over 200 ‘Born - Again’ Christians Return Our Certificates Every Year –WAEC

The return of certificates of the West African Examination Council by individuals who have found Jesus, known as ‘born-again’ Christians, is common in the offices of the examination body.

Our correspondent gathered that 15 individuals, who cheated when they sat for the examination in different years, recently approached WAEC as restitution to return their certificates.

Myschool correspondent also learnt that not only is restitution that involves the return of WAEC certificates by born-again Christians common, the body has files for such requests as it is almost a routine exercise.

In a report presented before the 56th meeting of the Nigeria Examination Council in Lagos in November 2013, WAEC reported 256 cases of restitution for certificate cancellation approval by the council.

Deputy Director, Public Affairs, WAEC, Mr. Yusuf Ari, said the 256 cases were just the ones the examination body got between April and November 2013.

He said, “The NEC, which is the highest policy making body of WAEC, which deliberates on everything that has to do with examination, meets twice in a year – April and November.

“We report cases of restitution at every meeting of the NEC. The 256 we reported at the 56th meeting in November is the number of restitution cases we got since the last meeting in April. So you can imagine how many cases we get every year.

“It is a routine matter here. It is very common to get requests from such born-again Christians, who are usually from a particular pentecostal church I won’t like to name. The individuals come to our office or write letters. Some of those who come even start crying. They say they cheated and they have decided to return their certificates because they are now born-again.”

But our correspondent learnt through another source at WAEC that most of

Commissioner for Education, Danladi Abdulhamid, on Thursday said the state government under its free education policy paid the fees for the students.

He said over 36,826 students sat for WAEC in public schools in the state, while 23,250 sat for the NECO.

Abdulhamid further said over 370,177 students sat for the internal examination conducted for final year pupils in public schools by the ministry last year, adding that of the figure, 54,542 of them sat for mock WAEC and NECO’.

According to him, the internal examination was conducted to gauge the likely performance of the pupils in public schools in WAEC, NECO and other public examinations, saying the result of the examination showed that 37,955 pupils passed in five credits, including English and Mathematics.

Although 16,588 students failed the test, the commissioner did not say what will become of this category of candidates.

However, Abdulhamid assured that the government would not go back on the implementation of its free education policy, saying it was of tremendous assistance to parents.

He also said the government would continue to invest in the restructuring of infrastructure in public schools to make them attain international standard.
