OAU: New Fee Regime Creates Tension

The new tuition at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, is generating fresh controversy, SODIQ OYELEKE writes This is not the best of times for the majority of students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile- Ife, Osun State. They are angry.

Behind their anguish is a new fee regime introduced by the university authorities. The comment by a fresh student of the school, who simply identifies himself as Akin, over the new tuition seems to say it all. He declares, “I am in trouble. Why did I choose OAU? My own is finished. I am not sure God wants me to continue with my university education, at least, for now. I shall return to my former place to continue as a primary school teacher.”

Three Months After, Anxieties Mount Over Missing OAU don

The Olomo family has been hoping to see a member of the family, Prof. James Olomo, walk back home since he left on October 17, 2013 for Eket, Akwa Ibom State where he had gone to have a discussion with an oil company.l;l

However, family, friends and kinsmen have begun to be more apprehensive each passing day hearing nothing from him for almost three months now. There is no news concerning his kidnap or death and his whereabouts has remained unknown since October 20, 2013 when he was last seen in his hotel room.

The professor of Nuclear Physics at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife had embarked on the trip during the protracted strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities to keep himself busy and to make some money to keep body and soul together.

Olomo, who lodged in a hotel on getting to Eket was said to have spoken on the telephone with some persons but he reportedly left the hotel room on October 19, leaving behind his belongings but has not been found since then.

In late 2013, the Olomo family of Risawe Anlerin Compound in Otan Ayegbaju, issued a statement to alert the public about the disappearance of the university don. The statement entitled, ‘Please Save Professor James Bolarinwa Olomo’ was signed by six family members, including a traditional Chief, Risawe of Otan Ayegbaju, Chief A. O. Olomo. The family said that the varsity don had remained incommunicado and his suspected abductors refused to pick his calls.

The don was once kidnapped on July 16, 2003 but was released after spending 31 days with his abductors but the family members and kinsmen are worried this time around because Olomo has been away for almost 90 days, without any information about him.

The statement reads in part, “James Bolarinwa Olomo, a professor of Physics at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife undertakes safety advice for oil companies. He was in Eket for

Open Letter To The Management Of FLC, OAU CDL And Security Agencies

Our attention has been drawn to the continued robbery, bullying and many other wicked acts perpetrated by the students of the Foreign Links Campus, Moro on the Obafemi Awolowo University Predegree Students.

This is not the first time we are experiencing this and it is quite unfortunate it has repeated itself again this year.

An incident happened around 7pm yesterday evening when two hostel mates (GENESIS Hostel) went down the lane of the street that leads to Nifemak Hostel to buy stuffs. Suddenly, three students of the Foreign Links Campus attacked them and demanded for their phones, it was their refusal to drop their phones that caused the predites been beaten blue black!

Fortunately for them, one of the Pre-Degree students ran to the hostel to call for help. We learnt that the hostel matron told them not to go there that she will rather go herself to sort things out which the students obliged to. Surprisingly, she went down there and came back with the OAU predite seriously stabbed on the neck.

We want to state here that this act is totally unaccepted and it is capable of unleashing trouble in the community if not properly checked.

We are using this medium to plead with the management of the Foreign links campus to please call their students to order and also punish any student found guilty of this act. We are also calling on the management of the Centre for Distance Learning, OAU and the Security Agencies there to kindly help us investigate this matter and ensure this act does not repeat itself anymore. We all have the Right to Life, Movement and Association. Any attempt to terminate these is criminal and
