The President of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP)
Chibuzor Asomuga has said that the union will embark on a mass protest
in Abuja next week.
While expressing obvious frustration over the nonchalant attitude of the
Federal Government concerning the prolonged strike, Mr. Asomugha said
that at the last meeting of the union with a federal government’s
delegates, the union agreed to a two –instalment payment of their
salaries and allowances.
It was decided in the meeting that the agreement reached will be made
known to the Government which will initiate the signing of memorandum of
understanding and consequent implementation.
But the president has not given the union since then which is about 3 weeks now.
According to Mr. Asomugha, the protest will involve students, market women, lecturers and labour unions.
A source made it known that the lecturers have not been paid March
salary and that they are not intimidated by the” no work, no pay” threat
of the Federal Government.
It was gathered that the initial 13 demands of the union was negotiated
down to four. The federal Government has resolved three of the demand
leaving only the issue of lecturer’s salaries unattended to.
